Kauai Artist Presents Sketchbook Journaling Class!

Beginning Sketchbook Journaling
at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens Southshore Visitor Center
Tuesday, June 29, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.(lunch break will be from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m.)

Join Kauai artist, Marionette, as she teaches you how to start your own sketchbook journal using the beautiful surroundings of the botanical gardens for inspiration. She will teach you how to use pencil, pen & ink, watercolors, watercolor pencils, and colored pencils to create field sketches of Kauai's flora and fauna. She will also suggest what information to include to make your journal unique, full of your own observations, and a lasting memory of your time on Kauai.

What you should bring: A light weight folding chair, a hat, sunglasses, suntan lotion, water, a sack lunch.

Optional to bring (but recommended): Insect repellent, a digital camera, a raincoat.
The gardens do have bottled water for sale and if you need a folding chair, please let Marionette know in advance so she can provide one.

Cost is $75 per person and includes your own high quality sketchbook journal to take home. Prepayment is required to guarantee your spot in the class.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the gardens.
Class size is limited to 5 people.
In case of bad weather the class will be canceled and all students will be given a full refund.

Like a carnival ride, its thrilling fun puts a smile on your face, and once again on solid ground, you want to turn around and go right back across for another ride!

TideOnBronzedShores - the story behind my banners and photo

Thought I'd introduce you to my banner...Well, the photo I used for this blog's banner! :D

Some people wonder what beach this was taken at, what are those big black rocks, how come the sands are a funny color?

I'm here to explain all that and more! Meet "TideOnBronzedShores", taken on what the locals lovingly refer to as "Glass Beach"...

This secluded, small beach is located in Port Allen/Ele Ele, Hawaii, on the West Side of the island of Kauai, Hawaii...It used to be known for it's wealth in bigger pieces of sea glass(there used to be a dump site off the coast in years gone by), however, the land has been raped and, sadly, bigger pieces of this gorgeous sea glass(made from discarded glass thrown or lost into the sea and churned up, sometimes for decades, against corals and amongst sands then finally deposited by the waves onto shores)are no longer found here...You now just find smaller pieces, however, the beach has not lost its allure for the glass crafters and those wishing to see Kauai off the beaten path...

I was lucky enough, when I first moved here a few years back, to have collected a few of those larger pieces - This sea glass is what I use in my Beach/Message-in-a-Bottle vials(you can find them in my etsy shop - just click on the vial photo located on the left side of the front page of this blog)...

The black rocks are lava rock and the sands are, indeed, this inviting bronze color created from a mixture of lava, beach sand, corals and minute pieces of sea glass all mixed together on the shoreline - it is more commonly known as a black sand beach...

So, if you are ever on Kauai, look up "Glass Beach" - you'll then understand my need to capture the tide and share it with you :D God bless! Dava

Last weekend, for Mother's Day, my mom-in-law(she's more like a second mom!) and I took a girls' day out and drove to Hanapepe for a look at their art and antique shops...

While tromping around town, we ran across the cutest local used bookstore, Talk Story
~ www.talkstorybookstore.com, which reminded me of the old antique stores in Northern Florida - open and airy, high ceilings, dark, worn, wooden floors, painted barn red and complete with oh-so-sweet shop cats :D! We fell in love with the place and its owners, Ed and Cynthia...Knowledgeable about their business, friendly and full of Aloha spirit Ed and Cynthia are intent on giving back to others, not to mention being all about the Hanapepe community...Visit their website for more history and information...On an end note, I am proud to say some of my photos are displayed and for sale in their shop ~ Thanks for your kindness Ed & Cynthia!

Hanapepe(or as it is fondly known by locals~Kauai's Biggest Little Town) is the art capital of our Garden Isle...Hanapepe means "crushed bay"...Enjoy a few photos of this quaint, historical and rustic town which are all for sale in my etsy shop...

Old Plantation Home Photo Essay ~ Part I

I took these photos at the Puakea Golf Course...It is an old plantation home, now empty and sadly in disrepair, but nevertheless has a haunting charm all its own...

I couldn't believe it when I saw that a badly broken set of windows on the second floor actually still had drapes in them ~ Gave me the feeling that someone's mama would be calling them in for dinner any minute!

FrenchDoorsOutToVeranda1&2:

This scene made me think of days gone by ~ Days spent sitting on the veranda with a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade...It also made me sad. Sad of what these once-proud French doors have become ~ broken glass and hanging by a hinge...
Yet, somehow, I think back again to lazy days on a new whitewashed veranda and a porch swing and those doors are back on their brass hinges; beveled panes of glass shining crystal clear in the summer sun...

As we rounded the corner and looked up, this window reminded my husband and I of every one of "those windows" appearing in every horror movie house we've ever seen ~ You know the ones - At any minute a freakish face will appear and you will know BIG trouble is about to happen...

God's Perfection & Beauty

Yesterday, while Josh and I were playing on the beach collecting treasures that the sea washes up on its vast shores, we came across one of those rare finds~~a perfectly formed, wonderfully colored cowrie(Mauritius Island Cowrie)shell! It gleamed in the sun, shiny and brilliant in its design and markings...It was breathtaking!

As I climbed over lava rock and walked across the slippery rock-strewn stones under my feet to get there, I prayed it would be empty...Empty of life that I could snatch it up and take it home to enjoy it there...

As I reached my "prize" and bent down to detect what I already knew in my heart to be, I realized how selfish I had been to pray for its emptiness...Such a beautiful creation was not made for one person, it was formed of love and talent and perfection for the creature living inside...The one clinging, with much life, to the side of a rock ~ gleaming in the sun as the tide washed over it again and again.

I knew then that I was just meant to enjoy it in its surroundings, its God-given home of the sea, and I smiled at the gift that God gave me~~even if I didn't get to take it to my own surroundings, my own home...And I smiled~~again...
